How would you describe yourself to someone who has never heard of Wrath James White? Wrath James White (Wrath): I would say that I’m a writer, a horror author, an extreme horror author. I write sick, scary, violent, sexual stuff. I write the terrifying and the erotic, and often both at the same time.

It’s funny, for many years, when asked to describe myself, I would answer without hesitation: “I’m a fighter, a kickboxer.” Now that I’m older, too old to fight, being a writer, a father, a husband, that means more to me than my years as a fighter. I still train fighters. I can’t completely abandon the sport I devoted sixteen years of my life to.
But that’s no longer how I identify myself. Now, I’m just a big guy who writes extreme horror and can still kick ass when necessary. AB: The adjectives I would use to describe the underlying themes of your writing are: unapologetic, real, disturbing, and honest. There’s a lot of meat to be found under all the gristle and blood (no pun intended). I’m curious how you construct your stories.
Do you build your plots around the themes, or vice versa? Wrath: I definitely build my plots around the themes. My stories are hypothetical situations arguing whatever idea I am trying to get across at the moment.
That’s a difficult way to write because of the risk of being too polemic, of creating wooden characters who are there as little more than straw men to be sacrificed to illustrate my own point of view. I use to worry about it a lot, but now I think I’ve found the right balance. AB: What’s your favorite part of being a writer? Your least favorite? Wrath: I hate writing, but I love to have written.
Writing means tuning out of reality and ignoring friends and family for long hours. Writing is solitary, which makes it necessarily selfish and that’s hard on your loved ones.
